To embrace the New Year I’m going to start this month off asking you an important question:

How would you live your life if you knew that – everything happens FOR you – not TO you?

What!?  You mean that divorce you are going through is happening FOR you?  You mean that chronic health condition you’ve been dealing with is happening FOR you? You mean that job you were hoping to get but didn’t, really didn’t happen FOR you?

Yep.  When things even look the bleakest, we can remind ourselves that whatever is in front of us, whatever we are dealing with, is happening for our highest good.  Although I wrote about this in my blog, Everything That Happens Is For Our Highest Good, it’s good to be reminded every once in a while.  We are constantly challenged in our lifetimes and it’s easy to fall prey to believing something bad is happening TO us.  Believing it’s happening to us leads us to feeling victimized and powerless and looking outside of ourselves for the answers.  Often It includes negative self talk that somehow we were responsible for the negative result by something we did or said.  We are often left with the belief that somehow we are not enough, not worthy, and flawed.

The fact that everything happens FOR us means that everything we go through is here to help us expand, grow and evolve in the ways we need.  We all have our own specific curriculum. No two are the same.

So if we believed that whatever challenges we face are happening FOR us, we might be able to face each challenge knowing there is a gift in there somewhere, even if we can’t see it at the time.  We might not fall into despair like we used to knowing that there is a reason for each challenge.  We may find ourselves less reactive to each scenario and more able to look at things from a larger perspective.  We may even delve inward to find the hidden gem of learning that can come from our difficulties and defeats.  We may find that eventually we can call a challenge a “blessing in disguise”.

Can we look back on our lives to find the truth in this idea?  As hard as our childhoods may have been, can you see that they were what we came here to experience and learn from.  Early experiences turn us into the people we were always meant to be; to create and to serve the world in the way that only we can.  We can trust there is a universal force flowing through us giving us everything we need. “What could you not accept, if you but knew that everything that happens, all events, past, present and to come are gently planned by One Whose only purpose is your good”? reads Lesson 135 in A Course in Miracles.

So here is an exploratory opportunity for you.  For the month of January, when you find yourself in a difficult situation, remind yourself it’s happening FOR you.  See if you can find the learning or even a stillness inside knowing it will all turn out how it’s supposed to.  Can you remind yourself that you may not be able to see the end result just yet. That eventually you will be okay with what has transpired, and know it was for the best?  Can you surrender to what is with courage or poise even when you don’t know what the outcome will be or don’t like the result you are witnessing?

I’d love to hear from you to know how it’s going.
